A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital undertakings.
