Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
